New Berlin prides itself on being a little country and a little city, and that is just what Future Roots Farm, an aquaponics and hydroponics farm in New Berlin is, too.
It just finished its first full year of raising crops in its greenhouse at 19555 W. Lincoln Ave. — just like crops grew last summer in fields around New Berlin. But it’s like the city in its cutting-edge approach to raising those crops — with results such as heads of lettuce growing out of PVC pipes.
Every Friday is harvest day for these perpetually producing “fields.” At this point, the produce regularly goes to four restaurants — Morel and Engine Company No. 3, both in Walker’s Point, Parkside 23 in Brookfield, and the Grassroots Salad Co. at Brookfield Square.
