Evergreens Republic

Evergreens Republic

Lau Fau Shan, Hong Kong

Greenhouse Size: 3/4 Acre
Established in 2014
The first of its kind in the Southeast Asian region, the project brought organic cultivation into Hong Kong challenging conventional wisdom on the association of organic vegetables to imports.

The Typhoon Greenhouse

The state of the art climate controlled greenhouse is tucked away in the backcountry of Lau Fau Shan, some 50km away from the central business district of Hong Kong. The Aquaponic greenhouse is a combination of Media beds, DWC troughs and Wicking beds. Additionally, dutch buckets and towers too are employed for certain crops. The typhoon tolerant structural design has withstood some of the worst hurricanes in the past years, rarely having to stop production during calamitous weather. Additionally, the greenhouse features some of the most advanced temperature control techniques used in the industry.

Multi-cropping at a different level

At 70% of productive land usage, the Evergreens farm generates just under 100 tons of produce, annually. The farm has produced up to thirty different varieties ranging from greens and herbs to six different types of tomatoes at one time, taking the claim of multi-cropping possibilities in Aquaponics to a whole new level. Some of tomato varieties grown here include Big Beef, Brandywine, Purple Cherokee, Green Zebra, Sun Gold, Supersweet and Pozzano.

Aquaculture

The Evergreens team had rolled out a climate sensitive plan for the combination culture of jade perch, koi carp and grass carp. The cycle ensured the perfect metabolism rate required for the consistent production of vegetables while keeping the production of fish sustainable in the long term.
